Recently, four dairy workers in the country have tested positive for the H5N1 strain, while this virus is spreading extensively in dairy cows. 

The number of infected is constantly increasing
The first cases of infected dairy cattle were seen in Texas in March. Now the virus has spread to 12 states. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), avian influenza A (H5N1) virus infection has been confirmed in 151 dairy cow herds. Since 2022, the USDA has detected this virus in more than 200 mammals in the USA. 

How does bird flu spread to humans?
Humans can get sick by coming into direct contact with birds infected with bird flu. It can spread through feathers, feces, or saliva of infected birds. Apart from this, this disease can also be spread by eating infected meat or being near infected birds. 

There is nothing to be afraid of
So far, human cases of bird flu have occurred from contact with poultry, live poultry markets or dairy cattle. Bird flu symptoms in humans appear within two to eight days of infection. So far, there have been no cases of the H5N1 virus spreading from one person to another, but the virus may infect humans more easily in the future.

  • Eat bird meat and eggs after cooking them thoroughly.
  • Wear a mask in the infected area and keep washing hands.
